How many people visit Magog Down?

This is a question the Magog Trust has been exploring over the last couple of years with the aid of a vehicle counter.  The answer is an awful lot: around 60,000 visits each year(1).  Unfortunately the counter can’t pick out who are Members or Friends, but from previous occasions when we have questioned visitors on the Down, less than a quarter have given their commitment towards keeping Magog Down the beautiful place it is.

There are a couple of daily peaks revealed by the vehicle counter: around 8.00am, when the car park opens, and at 2.00pm - each for about an hour.  Twice as many cars visit the Down on weekend days.  Most of the weekday visitors are dog walkers, again a number we determined from earlier surveys; some people come more than once a day, many come every day.

These numbers of visitors have an impact on the Down, particularly on the maintenance of gates, fences, paths, hedgerows and woods, not to mention emptying of dog bins, costs which mount up, amongst others, leading up to an annual expenditure just on upkeep of around £60,000 a year(2)

The provision of facilities does not come free and we would like everyone who visits Magog Down to contribute to its upkeep today and maintain it for our children’s tomorrows.  This can be done by becoming a Friend (or Member) or through the introduction of a Car Parking charge.  There are a number of hurdles to be conquered before this can be accomplished, but the Governors of Magog Trust feel that a parking charge would be fairer to all and are working towards achieving this.  Friends and Members would be entitled to free parking within their membership.  To them we give our grateful thanks for their support.  To those who currently make no contribution to their visit: you too can become a Friend of Magog Down if you're willing to pay annually; or if you prefer, make a one-off donation, either to the general funds or for a specific purpose.

Both Friend subscriptions and donations are eligible for Gift Aid, and we now have a combined form to use for either.

(1) extrapolating from the number of vehicles counted, assuming 1 or 2 people per car during the week, and up to 4 or 5 per car with families at the weekends.
(2) the overall expenditure figure, as referred to elsewhere, is around £90,000; the figure of £60,000 excludes the cost of farming the arable section of our land.

Old Newsletters

Up until 2011 we produced a twice-yearly Newsletter, and you can still download copies of some of these here:

Spring 2010

Autumn/Winter 2009

Spring 2009

In 2011 the re-designed website was launched, and so the decision was taken to stop producing these Newsletters, and instead to use this website as the main means of communication for news and articles of interest.

This move away from a regular Newsletter meant that more of the Members' and Friends' subscriptions could be spent directly on the costs of upkeep and husbandry on the Down.

We would love every regular visitor to Magog Down to help support its upkeep by becoming a Friend. Read more on our Join Us page, and then complete the application form.
