Easter weekend Bird Count on Magog Down

Following the success of the RSPB National Bird Count, the Magog Trust will be asking all visitors to support Magog Down by recording all the various species of birds they see on their walk. The dates are Saturday the 19th April and Monday the 21st April from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Members and Friends will be available to provide the recording sheet with pens, give any help or advice that is needed, and collect the sheets at the end of your walk.  Besides recording the number and species of birds, it will be very helpful to note where the birds are seen i.e. North Down, South Down, in the various woods, within the arable field of the South Down and Car Park.
There will be numerous small birds around such as chaffinches, blackbirds, great/blue/cold/longtail tits, dunnocks and robins. Don’t forget to look up in the sky, maybe you will see buzzards and kestrels or even the red kite that has been seen in the area recently. The bird mostly associated with Magog Down is the Skylark which you will see it flying on the wing and hear its stunning call.
The results will be aggregated and the analysis published on this website in due course.
If you would like to join The Stapleford Bird Club, it meets every first Saturday of the month and you will be very welcome. . (Summer time meetings are at 8am, switching to 8.30am in the winter months.) The monthly reports are all made available on this web site here, where they have the added value of "hot-links" to RSPB information about the birds mentioned.

Old Newsletters

Up until 2011 we produced a twice-yearly Newsletter, and you can still download copies of some of these here:

Spring 2010

Autumn/Winter 2009

Spring 2009

In 2011 the re-designed website was launched, and so the decision was taken to stop producing these Newsletters, and instead to use this website as the main means of communication for news and articles of interest.

This move away from a regular Newsletter meant that more of the Members' and Friends' subscriptions could be spent directly on the costs of upkeep and husbandry on the Down.

We would love every regular visitor to Magog Down to help support its upkeep by becoming a Friend. Read more on our Join Us page, and then complete the application form.
