Report from Stapleford Bird Club - 1st October 2011

A lone Chiffchaff called near the road as eight birders gathered in the Magog Down car park at 8am on October 1st which was a glorious sunny morning. In contrast to our previous two walks, there were birds to be seen in the nearby bushes, where we recorded two male Blackcap, Blue Tits, Yellowhammer and Blackbird.

Walking up the North Down, Skylarks were singing overhead and a distant Green Woodpecker yaffled. By Little Trees Hill, three Goldcrest were spotted. Just south of Jane’s Piece, a covey of 12 Red Legged Partridge was feeding amongst the emerging cereal crop. Nearby a flock of 30+ Lapwing was on the ground and a new member of our group was able to pick out a solitary Golden Plover among them.

Passing Vestey Wood at the southern end of the walk, there were numerous Chaffinch, Great Tits and Blue Tits. We also recorded four Long Tailed Tits, Dunnock and a Song Thrush. Jackdaws and Rooks fed among the sheep on the grazing land. Our final tally was 23 species

Our next walk on November 5th will be at the new winter time of 8.30. Maybe winter migrants will give us a display before the evening fireworks. Why not join us?
