Bird Reports 2011 prev

Report from Stapleford Bird Club - 8th January 2011

When eight birders gathered in the Magog Trust car park on January 8th, there was fine rain blown along by a brisk westerly wind. One member arriving early had had the good fortune to record both kestrel and sparrowhawk, the latter perching obligingly on a nearby gate post. Before we set off, a few fieldfare, one very close to us, and a redwing added to our score. Two skylarks fluttered low over the North Down and as we approached Magog Wood, a couple of great tits broke from cover. Apart from a flock of 40+ rooks, there was little to record around the arable land. The grazing land was much more fruitful with a group of jackdaws, and little further up, a flock of 30+ fieldfare with one or two redwing as well.

Nearby a mistle thrush perched on a fence post. As we looked at these, 50+ starlings rose from the cover of the long grass. The walk ended with the rain becoming much heavier as we headed for our cars. Our final tally was a rather disappointing 16 species.
