Report from Stapleford Bird Club - 5th March 2011

Fourteen birders met in the Magog Trust car park at 8.30am on Saturday March 5th which was a pleasant sunny morning with little wind. We had our usual car park ticks including blackbird, blue tit and chaffinch and we could already hear the skylarks singing over the North Down. As we walked up the rise of the Down, one skylark soared in its display flight and hovered at a great height, singing, directly overhead.

As we passed the set-aside by Jane’s Piece, a flock of 30+ fieldfare took off and moved north-west. On the way around the arable land, there were several robins, great and blue tits. A green woodpecker and a jay provided some much needed variety. Returning north, a pair of long-tailed tits passed quickly overhead. The grazing land was devoid of sheep and, as a result, was also devoid of birds with the exception of a couple more fieldfare.

Our final tally was 15 species.
